The button bar is the primary means for interacting with the map. It is split into two sections:
![]()
The button bar. The left four buttons are tools for interacting with the map; the right four are general functions relating to the map page.
Interaction with the map is accomplished by clicking in the map window. The tools are a means for selecting what happens when one clicks in the map window. The darker shaded button indicates the currently active function.
The 'Zoom in' (plus symbol) tool will zoom the map in four (4) times, centred on the user click. |
Clicking on the arrows around the map moves in the direction of the arrow (approximately 75% of the map width). This function is not available with javascript disabled or in older browsers. The grid is mostly decorative. |
The 'Zoom out' (minus symbol) tool will zoom the map out two (2) times, centred on the user click. |
The 'Recentre' tool recentres the map on the user click (can be used to pan the map) |
The 'Information' tool sets a click on the map to query the layers displayed. Query results are returned in a new window, and include information (where available) for all layers intersected at the clicked point. |
If javascript is not enabled or the browser is an older browser, the button-style tools are not available. In this case the tools are replaced by standard form drop-down lists. Selecting 'browse' mode and 'zoom in', 'zoom out' or 'recentre' allows one to zoom in (4 times), zoom out (2 times) or recentre the map (respectively). Selecting query mode queries the displayed layers (as for the 'information' tool above). |

Buttons supply other basic map functionality: save, load, print and a link to this help page.
The 'Reset Map' (arrow symbol) button resets the map to the original view, showing all of Australia, with no layers displayed. This functionality is not available if javascript is disabled (the button will not be visible). |
The 'Save current map session' (disk symbol) button pops up a window which allows you to save the current map session to our web server, using an e-mail/title combination as an identifier. You will need to use the same e-mail entered here to load the session. This functionality is not available if javascript is disabled (the button will not be visible). |
The 'Load saved map session' (folder symbol) button pops up a window for entering an e-mail address. On clicking 'OK' a list of map sessions is returned as links. Clicking one of these links will open a new window with the saved session. If changes have been made to data in the system they will be reflected in the loaded maps. Saved map sessions will not always remain exactly as they looked when saved. |
The 'Print map as a PDF file' (printer symbol) button allows one to specify a title for the map (in a popup window), and prints an A4-sized, formatted map as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. This functionality requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to be installed on your computer, ideally with its browser plugin. Maps printed in this way have a better printing resolution and layout than printing directly from the browser. The downloaded files are approximately 250Kb to 300Kb in size (they can take several minutes to download via modem). |
The Help button on 'How to use the map' links to this web page (in a new window). This functionality is not available if javascript is disabled (the button will not be visible). |
The legend and Table of Contents (TOC) are alternately visible and selectable using the tabbed bar at the top right of the page contents. The legend displays keys to layers displayed on the map. The TOC allows changes to map content, and links to metadata for individual layers.
Zoom to a preset geographic region by selecting from this list of Australian states and territories (and some sub-regions). The map window will redraw on selection. This functionality is not available unless javascript is enabled.
Search for a mineral deposit by name (or part of the name). On hitting enter or pressing the 'Go' button, a list of matches (by either deposit name or synonym) is returned from the OzMin database.
[more information about how to use the search popup]
Clicking this link redraws the map as a default Australia-wide coverage (not including external territories). Only default layers (coastlines, state boundaries) are drawn.
The reference map shows the extent of the main map window graphically relative to the whole of the Australian mainland and Tasmania. A black box (or cross-hairs when zoomed in a long way) shows the extent. If the extent is outside, or fully inclusive of, the reference map no box or cross-hairs will show.
The graphical scale bar helps in the interpretation of distance on the map.
The numerical scale, while showing a useful approximation of scale, is not accurate due to variations in computer screen resolutions. It may be significantly inaccurate.
The bottom-left and top-right corners of the map in latitude/longitude (WGS84 datum) pairs describes the extent of the visible map in words.
Commodities are labeled on the map by a standard code (which reduces the length of on-screen labels). The link 'Key to commodity abbreviations' opens a window with a glossary of these codes and their definitions (eg. Cbr is a code for Brown Coal).
