Geoscience Australia

Geoscience Australia is the national agency for geoscience research and geospatial information located within the Resources, Energy and Tourism portfolio.

The agency's research and information contributes to enhanced economic, social and environmental benefits to the community by providing input for decisions which impact on resource use, management of the environment and the safety and well-being of Australians.

Geoscience Australia has specific outcomes and outputs which stem from a broad corporate aim. Its major planned outcomes are:

  • Enhanced global attractiveness of Australia's offshore and onshore exploration.
  • Improved resource management and environmental protection.
  • Safer communities and transportation.

Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism's aim is to improve the wellbeing of Australians by increasing the international competitiveness of Australian manufacturing, resources and services industries and by developing Australia's innovation and technology capabilities and infrastructure.

The Department's Regional Minerals Program was established to promote regional economic development by facilitating the growth of the mining and minerals industry, including the oil and gas industry. The program funds studies in partnership with industry and governments to identify infrastructure requirements and ways to remove any regional impediments to the economic development of these industries. It has a particular focus on encouraging enhanced levels of exploration, mining and processing activities and disseminating mineral industry information.

Minerals Council of Australia

The Minerals Council of Australia is the peak, national organisation representing the exploration, mining and minerals processing sectors, as well as companies in product and service provision. Its member companies produce up to 85% of Australia's mineral output and a slightly higher proportion of Australia's minerals exports.

The Minerals Council of Australia's mandate is to promote a business platform conducive to investment, growth and profitability for a minerals industry which is safe, globally competitive, innovative and socially and environmentally responsible.

The Council has a long-standing reputation for credibility and effectiveness in determining public policy and operational practice, which members agree they will not compromise for competitive advantage.

Through engagement with stakeholders and opinion leaders, the Mineral Council of Australia is working to build understanding and awareness of the industry's s socio-economic significance and its contribution to the quality of life of all Australians, particularly those in rural and regional Australia. Effective engagement also improves the industry's responsiveness to community expectations in relation to its economic, social and environmental stewardship responsibilities.
